Hydrographic Positioning in Surveying and Mapping
Carl F. Shangraw, PLS, CFedS, MSE Professor of Surveying
Engineering at Ferris State University
The role of the surveyor continues to evolve. Among the major
challenges facing the modern surveyor is being able to integrate
large data sets obtained from numerous sources with varying
degrees of precision into a single, three dimensional, seamless model meeting the
needs of the client. This presentation will provide an overview of the surveying
profession, describe remote sensing systems particularly those relating to point cloud
data sets, explain the strategic partnership forged with the Freshwater Studies
Institute at Northwest Michigan College (NMC) in Traverse City, Michigan, and
provide a status report on a current student project integrating high definition laser
scanning of above water structures, with sector scanning of below water structures
with a surface model of the NMC harbor bottom developed from hydrographic
Carl F. Shangraw is a Professor of Surveying Engineering at Ferris State University.
He holds a Master of Science Degree in Surveying Engineering from Purdue
University, is licensed as a Professional Surveyor in the States of Michigan and
Wisconsin, and is a Certified Federal Surveyor (CFedS). He is a member of The
National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), the Hydrographic Society of
America (THSOA), the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), and the
Michigan and Wisconsin societies of professional surveyors. Carl has over 20 years
of teaching experience at Ferris in addition to having over twenty years of practical
experience with both government and private sectors. He is a retired Lieutenant
Colonel from the U.S. Army Reserves.
