National Weather Service Station Tour
Presented by: Brandon Hoving, Observing Program Leader/Meteorologist, National Weather Service, Grand Rapids, MI
Program Description: We will tour the Grand Rapids National Weather Service Station.
We will have a brief outside tour (weather permitting) to view where precipitation measurements are taken and general radar. Inside we will see where various personnel work and understand their core responsibilities. Conclusion will be in the operations area where the meteorologists issue forecasts. We will meet at the Kent County Road Commission Conference room. Up to 20 participants at 12 noon. Second group to follow at 12:30. Lunch boxes will be served in the Kent County Road Commission Conference room starting at 11:30.
Biography: Brandon received a BS in Meteorology from Central Michigan University in 2008. He started working at the Grand Rapids National Weather Service Office as a paid student intern in 2007 and moved to a full time position in 2008. Brandon was promoted to the position of Observing Program Leader in 2012. He oversees the NWS Cooperative Weather Observer Network in West Michigan as well as the climate program. He is also involved in forecasting aspects at all levels (7-day forecasts, aviation, marine, severe weather, winter weather, etc.). Particular interests of Brandon’s include surface weather observations and general climate trends.
Lunch: Box lunch, $15 per person
Location: Kent County Road Commission South Complex, 4949 S Complex Dr. SE Grand Rapids, MI 49512-4091: located off E. Patterson, just south of CSX Bridge, aligned with 40th Street on west.
