Message from the President

July 17,2018 Happy New Year! It may not feel like the holidays but our MSPE year starts on July 1st each year. The new board members that you swore in at the May annual conference are now officially at work helping to support MSPE in their respective roles. The 2017/2018 Board took on many difficult issues and we very much appreciate their herculean effort and professionalism. One thing that MSPE does well is to allow for continuity. Our Treasurer and Secretary are on alternating 2 year terms. So we should never lose them both in the same season. Our Regional...

Qualifications Matter – FREE Webinar

Qualifications Matter There has been a concerted effort to place a greater emphasis on price-based bidding of engineering services, in which cost would be a significant factor in determining the firm awarded a given contract. Focusing on short-term cost-savings results in less qualified bidders securing contracts for projects that, if completed without the proper expertise, can cause property damage, bodily harm, and prohibitive long-term costs. NSPE recognizes that Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) ensures that qualified engineering firms are ranked on the basis of their design ability, experience, and judgment, to provide these services. As more legislators and regulators take action on the...

Important Message from the Board of Directors

Dear MSPE Members: Earlier today we accepted the resignation of our Executive Director, Shada Biabani.  Shada has accepted a position as the Executive Director of the Michigan Water Environment Association (MWEA).  Shada will remain with MSPE through next week with her last official day being April 13th. This is a critical time for MSPE as we work diligently to prepare for our annual conference coming up May 3-4th.  We can assure you that volunteers are stepping up to ensure that this event is a first-class conference.  We are working closely with the Western Chapter to serve as our hosts for...

NSPE releases policy on Autonomous Vehicles

NSPE represents licensed professional engineers who, under state licensure laws and rules, have a responsibility for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public, above all other considerations. With the introduction of autonomous vehicles, automation is poised to become a much larger part of our transportation environment. Much of the discussion to date has been on the technology, its capabilities, and the perceived public benefits. However, many questions remain unanswered by industry, which has led to uncertainty within the public regulatory environment. To address this uncertainty, NSPE proposes the outcome-based standards below, based on careful consideration and deliberation, as...

Did you know that … ?

The Michigan MATHCOUNTS Program reaches more than 130 schools across Michigan. Over 1,025 students will participate this year in the 15 Chapter Competitions sponsored by MSPE Chapters. 9 out of every 10 Mathletes say MATHCOUNTS made them better problem solvers. MATHCOUNTS is a math enrichment, coaching and competition program for middle school students. It stimulates student interest by making math achievement as challenging, exciting, and prestigious as school sports. The Michigan MATHCOUNTS program is coordinated by volunteer members of the MSPE and the Chapter competitions are funded by MSPE Chapters. How can you be involved?  Each Chapter competition has two main needs...

January Letter from the President

It’s a new year and that means it’s time to move forward! MSPE is moving forward by focusing our efforts on improvements to services for our members. In particular, we are focusing on increasing membership and increasing member engagement. Increasing membership: Our membership committee and Board will be working on increasing our membership at the state and local levels. Our state and local officers discuss how to go about this task often. A common question being asked in those discussions is "why do you belong to MSPE?" Maybe some of you haven't asked yourself this question. This topic reminds of...

Licensure Under Attack

Record-Setting Webinar: On Wednesday, January 10, NSPE hosted a webinar “Licensure Under Attack” with NCEES CEO Jerry Carter and Arizona Board of Technical Registration Executive Director Melissa Cornelius. The webinar provided critical insights on the growing threats to occupational licensure, how they impact professional engineers, and how the PE community is uniting to oppose these existential threats to the profession. The response to the webinar was enormous and unprecedented. A record-setting 700 individuals registered, including NSPE members and nonmembers and 520 participated in the webinar. The taped webinar is now available on the NSPE website to all members.
